2026 Korean Card Overseas Payment Effective Rate — Complete Guide

Every overseas payment with a Korean card costs slightly more than the mid-market rate. The gap is determined by three factors: (1) international brand fee, (2) card issuer markup, and (3) DCC penalty. This guide breaks down the 2026-04-24 published fee schedules so you can see exactly which card costs how much more.

This guide is based on the 2026-04-24 mid-market rate snapshot and publicly posted fees from card issuers and international brands. Actual charges depend on the clearing-date exchange rate, card policy, and whether DCC was accepted. Unofficial tool.

1. Three Axes of KRW Overseas Charge

  • International brand fee (Scheme Fee) — The markup added by Visa/Mastercard when converting the transaction currency to USD for settlement. Visa 1.0%, Mastercard 1.0%, Amex 1.4%, JCB 0%, UnionPay 0.6%.
  • Card issuer markup — The 0.18–0.25% added by your Korean card issuer for FX risk and processing. Typically labeled "해외이용수수료" on your statement.
  • DCC penalty (Dynamic Currency Conversion) — When an overseas merchant/ATM asks "Pay in KRW?", accepting adds 5–8% on top of the brand fee and issuer markup. Airports/tourist spots: 7–8%; hotels/chains: ~5%.

4. DCC — The "Pay in KRW?" Trap

DCC is a service where overseas merchants/ATMs pre-convert your transaction to your home currency (KRW for Koreans). It looks convenient, but merchants/DCC providers add approximately 7.00% margin. A standard Visa/Master payment at 1.25% effective becomes 8–9% when DCC is accepted — more than 7× more expensive. Always choose Local currency, and reject DCC even on TravelWallet and TravelLog prepaid cards.

5. Travel Cards vs Regular Credit Cards

  • Travel/short-term abroad: Prepaid travel cards (0%) win decisively. On 100 USD you save ~₩1,700 vs a regular card; on 1,000 USD that's ₩17,000.
  • Points/miles strategy: Premium credit cards offering 1.5–2% cashback or 1 USD = 2 miles abroad can reverse the fee advantage. However, rewards are calculated on the KRW-billed amount — don't confuse this with DCC.
  • ATM cash withdrawal: Hana TravelLog (US$500/day) / Woori WON+ (3 free/month) / TravelWallet (US$500/month) waive ATM operator fees within limits. Regular credit card cash advances carry a 3–5% fee plus interest — not recommended.
